Today’s market offers a wide variety of oral care products. In stores, you can find toothpastes in different colors, flavors, or flavorless and scentless options, toothbrushes of various shapes, and numerous types of mouth rinses. However, despite this variety and the effectiveness of these products, many people still suffer from oral diseases. Austėja Grinevičiūtė, a dental hygienist at Periodont clinic, believes that most problems arise from improper brushing techniques.
Everyone wants healthy teeth and a beautiful smile. So, how should we properly take care of our teeth?
Brushing your teeth seems simple, but did you know that more than half of people do it incorrectly? Brushing incorrectly is a common cause of many oral health problems. Only proper and effective tooth brushing can ensure healthy teeth and a beautiful smile.
How often should you brush your teeth?
Many people spend only about a minute brushing their teeth. However, there’s no need to rush or overdo it. Brushing after every meal in a hurry can negatively affect your teeth. We recommend brushing at least three minutes, twice a day—in the morning after breakfast and in the evening after dinner. Don’t forget about dental floss, interdental brushes, and mouth rinses.
There are so many toothpastes available. How do you choose?
You can choose almost any of the available options. The main criterion is the fluoride content, which helps prevent cavities. Whitening toothpastes are best used periodically, as long-term use may increase tooth sensitivity.
How do you choose a toothbrush?
Choosing a toothpaste may seem difficult, but often the toothbrush is selected based on mid-range price and pleasant design. Toothbrushes should be replaced regularly—every three months is recommended. When choosing a toothbrush, remember that proper brushing technique is just as important as the brush itself.
There are many brushing techniques. Which one should you use?
Your dentist can recommend the best method for you. If a professional consultation is not possible, we recommend a standard brushing technique—sweeping or circular motions from the gums to the chewing surfaces. Don’t forget to massage the gums and clean the tongue at the end. Brushing should become a daily habit.
Take care of your teeth, visit your dentist regularly, and you will have strong, healthy teeth and a beautiful smile!
