Long-Term Success of Implant Osseointegration

Is it possible to place implants in patients with osteoporosis?

Long-term success of dental implant osseointegration is crucial. The complex genetic mechanisms of osseointegration (implant bone integration) are not yet fully understood. However, it is believed that patients with osteopenia or osteoporosis have a higher risk of implant loss.

Osteopenia/osteoporosis is not an absolute contraindication for implant placement. Early assessment of osteoporosis risk allows for a more accurate evaluation of implant possibilities, prediction of implant longevity, and the use of special implants in bone with reduced density.

Studies have found higher implant survival rates in patients taking low-dose antiresorptive therapy (ART) for osteoporosis treatment.

To ensure timely diagnosis of osteoporosis or osteopenia, it is important to consult doctors and undergo testing as early as possible, especially if there is a genetic predisposition to the disease.

Panoramic dental X-rays, commonly used in dental offices for oral disease diagnosis, can help in the early detection or suspicion of osteoporosis. Initial analysis of osteoporosis markers and risk assessment from a panoramic X-ray, followed if necessary by referral for consultation regarding osteoporosis, can help determine on a case-by-case basis whether to proceed with implant placement.
